Interior design, interior designer, two words closely related. In other articles, we have talked a lot about interior design so in this article series, we will be discussing more about who made this interior design. Of course, we all know what an interior designer is. An interior designer is a professional who specializes in creating aesthetically pleasing and functional interior spaces. In today’s “Behind Their Success Series”, we will be discussing one of the most famous interior designers who is known for his innovative and unconventional approach to design. It is none other than Philippe Starck!

Philippe Starck, a French well-known designer and interior architect, was born in 1949, in Paris, France. Born as a son of an aeronautical engineer and inventor, Starck grew up in a creative environment which most likely influenced his early interests in design and architecture and may have played a role in shaping his later career as a designer. He studied at the École Nissim de Camondo in Paris, where he received formal training in interior design and architecture with a strong foundation in design principles and techniques.

 

Philippe Starck's motivation in interior design is deeply rooted in his belief that design should serve a purpose beyond mere aesthetics. His approach to interior design is multifaceted, driven by several key motivations that include functionality, innovation, sustainability, emotional connections and social responsibility.

 

After completing his studies, Starck embarked on his career as a designer, initially working on interior design projects and later expanding into other areas such as furniture design, product design, and architecture. Throughout his career, Philippe Starck has collaborated with numerous companies and produced iconic designs that reflect his unique style, which often combines functionality with whimsical and futuristic elements. His designs often challenge conventional aesthetics and push the boundaries of what is considered traditional design.

In 1976 he founded the company “Starck Product”. He has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the design world and continues to be a prominent figure in contemporary design, one of them is the National Order of the Legion of Honour that he received in 2000. In addition to his design work, Philippe Starck has also been involved in architectural projects around the world, including hotels, restaurants, and public spaces. A few notable interior projects he did, include : 

 

1. The Café Costes, Paris 

Philippe Starck's design for the Café Costes is characterized by its sleek and minimalist aesthetic, a mix of modernism with a touch of theatricality and whimsy. The interior features a blend of materials such as steel, glass, and leather, with bold geometric shapes and clean lines dominating the space. It is a project that made him an international star.

2. The Delano Hotel, Miami Beach, Florida

The Delano Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida, is one of Philippe Starck's most famous interior design projects. Philippe Starck transformed the historic Art Deco building into a chic and sophisticated boutique hotel. Featuring  a white-on-white color scheme, which creates an atmosphere of modern elegance and tranquility, Starck incorporated elements such as oversized furniture, sheer curtains, and eclectic decorative accents to create a sense of whimsy and drama throughout the hotel. 3. Yoo Hotel and Residences Worldwide Project

Philippe Starck's collaboration with Yoo has resulted in the creation of several iconic residential developments and hotels around the world, each reflecting Starck's distinctive design philosophy and Hitchcox's expertise in property development. Those projects included Yoo Panama in Panama City, Yoo Nordelta Residences in Buenos Aires, Yoo Berlin in Berlin, Yoo Pune in Pune, Yoo Istanbul in Istanbul and a lot more.

Starck has been involved in the design of several Mama Shelter hotels. Infusing each property with his distinctive style and innovative approach to hospitality design, the hotels feature bold and playful interiors, incorporating elements such as colorful furnishings, eclectic decor, and whimsical details. Locations include Paris, Marseille, Istanbul, and Los Angeles.
