Seven Main Principles of Interior Design You Should Know

Everyone would love to have a room with a cozy interior design! And how would an interior designer achieve that? In the process of designing a space, there are a few things to consider such as the interior design's principles that professionals need to be aware of in order to bring together a functional and visually appealing room. So let’s talk about the seven main principles of interior design you should know!

1. Balance

One of the keypoint when designing a room is how to make the room look balanced! In design, balance gives the impression of equilibrium in visual aspects, such as distributing furniture and decorative objects as evenly. To achieve balance, it is important to pay attention to where the elements are placed within the space. For this, we must carefully analyze the line, shape, color, and texture of the different objects. There are three types of balances : symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial balance.

a. Symmetrical or formal : This type of balance is simple to achieve since design features are duplicated on both sides, by using a mirroring effect that evenly divides your space into two, where each side reflects the other. For example, identical lamps on either sides of the bed or the chair facing each other on each side of the dining table. However, because it tends to be repetitive, you have to be able to pay attention to it properly because it can give the impression of being boring or monotonous.

b. Asymmetrical or informal : This type of balance is not as ordered as symmetrical balance and can be more complex and exciting since unlike symmetrical balance, it doesn’t require an exact duplication. You can replace the mirroring effect with something more flexible, albeit with a similar shape, size or dimension yet keep the visual weights of lines, colors, forms, and textures balanced. So, instead of two identically-sized couches opposite one another, use one couches matched with two chairs by the side.

c. Radial balance : This balance has a more intricate approach. Radial balance is achieved when there is a central focal point with other elements radiating from or around it. A fireplace could be the example of the focal point in question, and arranging some other furniters or decors around it carefully for an example of radial balance. There is a lot of repetition of form, texture, and color.

2. Unity and Harmony

Each design element must be able to support each other, blend together and look harmonious. Unity and harmonization in these design elements will make everything look perfect according to the concept that has been designed. The design elements referred to here are space, lines, shapes, colors, lighting, textures and patterns. Otherwise, the items in the space will clash and look out the place. Unity and harmony can be created using various methods, such as grouping furniture together, using similar colors and textures, or making a focal point. When harmony is used in interior design, it results in a cohesive and inviting space.

3. Rhythm

Not only music, interior design also has rhythm. The rhythm referred to here is a sequence of arrangements that appears harmonious. It is important in order to increase the comfort and beauty of a room. The key to incorporating this is through decorative repetition that captures the eye. By applying these visual mechanisms, we can direct someone’s attention around the space and ultimately enhance the overall impression of the room. One example is by placing wall decorations at the same distance.

4. Proportion and Scale

Scale tends to refer to the size of objects in relation to the space they occupy and to each other. It's about how elements within a room relate to the overall size and volume of the space. It is used in order to create harmony, impact comfort and functionality of a room and influence the visual impact. Proportion deals with the relationship between different elements within a room. It involves how the size, shape, and placement of objects relate to one another and to the overall design scheme. You can get a great proportion by considering balance, visual hierarchy, architectural features and furniture placement. These two are connected and could be used to create a visual interest in the room.

5. Emphasis

A room should have a focal point to highlight and draw people’s attention with the aim of giving the first impression when entering the room. A huge art piece in the middle of the living room is a good example of how to use a focal point to make your home look more impressive. After deciding on the focal point, the rest of the room should be designed to complement it. Color and texture are one of the most powerful tools that you can use to create emphasis.

6. Contrast

Contrast is the perfect way to add intrigue to a space that could otherwise become rather bland, such as shapes, materials, texture, patterns and scale. For example, light against dark, rough against smooth, or pairing something significant with something relatively minor. When using contrast in your design, it is important to remember “less is more” since it could be overwhelming and make a space feel chaotic.

7. Details

Attention on the details is the last of 7 main principles of interior design! You cannot forget about the details~ A little details can make all the difference, details make a room unique! By adding personal touches and paying attention to small details, you can create a space that is truly your own.
